Chocolate “cake” oats

1/2 cup oats (or oat bran)

1/2 cup water (or milk)

1/2 cup milk

1 Tbsp cocoa powder (use more or less depending on how “chocolaty you want your oats”)

1 egg white (or 2 tsp flax meal)

sweetener to taste (I don’t like very sweet things, so I use the equivalent        of 1 tsp sugar – most people need more)

Combine water, milk, oats, cocoa, sweetener and egg white (or flax). If using egg whites be sure to whip very well, to avoid having little bits of egg whites visible. Cook on medium/low till the oats start to boil, and then mix regularly till they reach your desired consistency. Serve with desired toppings (my favorites are banana’s, Greek yogurt, almonds, strawberries, coconut) or enjoy plain!

(Ok, so if you’re expecting these oats to taste like cake you’ll probably be disappointed. But the egg whites (or ground flax) give them a sort of “cakey” flavour in my opinion, so I’m still sticking with  that name :P.  They are very simple to prepare, but the end result is a very thick, chocolaty bowl of oatmeal with extra protein and a bit of a caffein kick from the cocoa powder.
